Cover Vote!

Okay, I have two versions of the cover for the Angora Napkin graphic novel here and I can't decide which one to go with.

It was my original intention when I came up with the idea to go with the aged look, like an old EC comic that's been sitting in an attic for decades...

...But the clean version has lots of appeal as well with the sharper, more vivid colours. I wonder if it's more eye catching?

So, which one do you prefer? Cast your vote!

Aged

Every other book on the shelf is going to be bright bold in the hopes of getting attention...the faux-folds and tears are really going to stand out on the shelf!

Have you seen the book design for Aaron Renier's Spiralbound?

The aged quality isn't overly gimmicky either...it suits the project completely!

Thanks for the votes peeps!

So far the comments are voting for "Aged" (except you Mike, ya belligerent little so-and-so) but the poll count is neck and neck.

It's like Hillary VS Obama!

Hey Eric, you got me to by a copy of "Spiralbound" in Moncton! Great book design.

New. Not to be an arse, but then the reader gets the joy of scuffing it up themselves. Imagine the pride you'll feel down the line seeing people's dog-eared, stained, mutilated copies. The loving abuse caused by repeat readings. With the old version you'll hardly be able to tell.

That said, if you went with the new version, i'd suggest moving that title red toward the orangey tone of the old copy.

Wrinkles are earned over time. They are beautiful, but half the beauty comes from the implied journey. I knew a kid in high school who started going grey at 14. He didn't look distinguished. He just smoked too much.

With the design style you chose, I'd say aged cover all the way. It really fits it and will make it stand out against the other fair. It suits the vintage look you're going for...

A-ged. I'm partial to that sort of worn out, scuffed and bent look myself but who knows what all them kids is gonna like today. Make it look more like the Internets.

I now WANT the Joker to kill Robin.

Humm, I looked them over and over again, and i have come to my conclusion!

*drum roll*

... Ok i didn't end up choosing one or the other, The "Old" one adds character and Class to a new G. Novel were as the "New" one does make it more "Eye Catching" and may be more appealing to the "Younger" generation... Yes i know I fit into that "Younger Generation"...

But while I was writing this I have come to my conclusion...
Go with the "Older" more worn out cover, I find it more "Eye catching" and appealing.

I say NEW.

Aged is Kitschy and appeals only to those who 'get the joke' and understand where you're coming from, most likely because WE know you.

Eric at the top has a point, but everyone on a shelf is always trying to 'deke out the competition' - the scuffs will be passed over by the jaded and cynical readers that abound in Ye Olde Comix Shoppe as an artificial attempt at a nostalgia that never actually existed for this book.

If your inside pages don't match the outside in terms of tone, execution and style, you risk setting up an expectation you will not be rewarding.

Stand on the legs of the property and look Brand-Spanking New, I say!

Because it is.

Man, I really love both of these, and from an artistic standpoint I'd say old. But I'm casting my vote to say NEW.

All your readers here are fellow artists and seems like we dig the old look because of what we like, but the general public is probably going to say new. Warren has a great point that the inside should match the front, so unless you make every page look worn, I say make it look new. I've put down so many comic books after seeing a great cover, opening it up and being disappointed by what was inside compared to the cover.

Love this artwork so far and can't wait to see it moving!

definitely the old-school one. since the cover was designed in that style, it would be awkward for me to see the vivid colours and clean sharp lines.
